What is pigmentation problem? How can it be controlled?

Pigmentation is a typical skin condition that is caused due to increased production of the melanin present in the skin.  There are some special cells present in the skin which are responsible for the production of melanin. When there is certain damage to these cells, it can affect the melanin production which may lead to pigmentation. There are different methods of treatment available for pigmentation reduction. Some are natural methods and some are chemical exfoliation – the peels done by dermatologists to treat pigmentation.

Indications/Where It’s Used

In general, this problem is visible in the areas which remain exposed under the sun maximum. So the areas which are majorly affected by pigmentation are face, neck and visible parts of hands.

Pre-Procedure

•    You should strictly avoid going to the parlor for tan removal, at least 3 weeks before the chemical peel treatment.
•    Avoid Vitamin A medications at least 5 days before this treatment (Applicable for Aggressive peels).
•    Keep your skin protected from the exposure of sun 4 weeks before you undergo the process. Use sun sunscreen if you need to go out.
•    Avoid waxing or hair removal cream on the areas where pigmentation treatment will be given.

Procedure

For Mild Peel:

•    The doctor will use a cotton ball, brush, or sponge for even application of chemical solution which contains glycolic or salicylic acid. The treated area of skin will start whitening. Patients may feel slight stinging when a chemical solution is applied to the skin. After this doctor will apply a neutralizing solution or give a soft wash to the skin to remove leftover chemical solution from the treated area.

For Moderate Peel:

•    The doctor will use an applicator with a cotton-tip for applying the chemical solution on the affected area. This solution contains trichloroacetic acid, with or without glycolic acid. This area of skin will start whitening. After a few minutes of this application, cool compresses will be given. A feeling of slight stinging or burning may be there for about 20 minutes.

For Aggressive Peels:

•    The patient will be given intravenous (IV) fluids, and close monitoring of the heart rate will be done. With the use of the cotton-tipped applicator, carbolic acid (phenol) will be applied on the skin. Skin will turn white or even gray. To restrict the skin exposure to phenol, the procedure will be done in portions with a 15-minutes gap. A complete-facial procedure will be completed in 90 minutes.

Post Procedure

Follow the same instructions mentioned in the pre-procedure section. Follow strictly dermatologist’s instructions and use a protective ointment to soothe the skin.

Side Effects

Side effects are not so harsh in a chemical peel, although you may find some redness, scarring or change of skin color.
