Laser toning is one of the unique types of treatment for managing melasma and other skin related problems. Use of laser energy is done to reduce the visible pigmentation. It breaks down the melanin molecules naturally, allowing the human immune system to fade them.
Where Is It Used?
Laser toning is used for controlling Melasma, Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, Dark spots, Freckles, Acne Scarring, redness, Rosacea, and Dark Circles.
Pre Procedure Workup
There is nothing called pre-procedure workup for laser toning. All that you need to do is that two weeks before this procedure, you need to keep yourself protected from sun exposure as much as you can.
Procedure
Application of Q-switched laser beams is done for skin treatment. The procedure involves penetration of the laser beams of 1064nm + 532nm wavelengths right through the inner layers of affected skin for removing scars or blemishes which remains deep-seated. Laser toning technique heats up specific layers of skin causing no direct destruction of the skin layers. This treatment as per dermatologists cause ‘controlled thermal injury’. It triggers a natural response activity in the body for the production of excess collagen and elastin. Q Switch laser which is used in this treatment produces short nanosecond laser pulses. It also has a rejuvenation mode. Same is delivered via a special PTP mode (Photoacoustic Technology Pulse) that can stimulate collagen for skin repair with no downtime. Although there is no pain experienced by the patients undergoing this procedure, in some cases, a dermatologist may recommend and apply topical analgesic also called local anesthetic to reduce the level of discomfort.
Post Procedure
After the procedure, patients are given instruction to avoid any prolonged exposure under the sun. Application of broad-spectrum 30 SPF sunscreen must be done after every two hours gap. The skin should remain moisturized always.
Side Effects
These techniques of skin treatment have very negligible side effects. Redness, swelling and bit itching is common to see. The specialist may recommend steroids for managing swelling which is caused as after effect of this treatment. Other risks of this treatment include temporary scarring and bacterial infection.
Results Expected
After undergoing the procedure of laser toning for treating brown scars, acne scars or melasma, it will take around one to four weeks for proper fading of the scars. If the treated scars are quite old then that will need some extra treatments. Well, laser toning in such case will still produce outstanding results.
Sessions Required
The number of sittings a patient will need primarily depends on the type of skin patient is having and other concerns. In general, all laser procedure (non-ablative) needs several sessions to deliver the apt results. The number of sessions may vary between 4 and 10 treatments altogether.
