Introduction To Female Pattern Baldness

Female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is a type of hair loss that affects women. It is quite similar to male pattern baldness. The only difference is that here women can start losing their hair somewhat in a different pattern compared to men.

Causes

  • Family History– Such type of baldness can happen due to hereditary.
  • Hormonal Changes And Medical Conditions– Hormonal imbalance can be one of the major reasons behind hair fall in the female. Woman with PCOS or those who are reaching menopause face a lot of hair fall.
  • Medications And Supplements– Certain medications and supplements react on the body. As a result, hair fall is noticed in women. In the case of fertility treatment, high dose of hormonal medicines and injections are given and hair fall is observed.
  • Radiation Therapy– In the case of cancer patients, radiation therapy is given which leads to hair fall.
  • Stress– After passing through any stressful event, some women experience an increase in hair fall.
  • Hair Styles– Few hairstyles and hair treatments react on the follicles of the hair and shrink it leading to hair loss.

Types

Androgenetic alopecia is a typical form of hair loss in women and has 3 subdivisions:-

Type I: A small percentage of hair thinning which starts from the hair partitioning area.

Type II: Finding an increase in baldness at the hair partitioning area.

Type III: Hair thinning across the scalp with maximum visibility of the scalp.

There are other types of hair loss found in women that include Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata and Traction Alopecia.

Treatments

  • Minoxidil Therapy: Minoxidil therapy is one of the most popular ways of treating the problem of hair loss in both men as well as women. Minoxidil therapy is effective in controlling hair loss and promotes hair growth for female pattern baldness. A good percentage of women trying Minoxidil treatment experienced hair regrowth after 3 to 6 months.
  • PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) Therapy:PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) therapy is a popular treatment for hair loss problem. It includes 3 steps. First, the expert would draw a small amount of blood, process the same in a centrifuge, and then the plasma rich in platelets will be injected on the scalp at the follicle level.
  • Dermarollers: Dermaroller treatment is done for hair growth stimulation. It increases scalp absorption power and can be used after applying Minoxidil. Hair growth using dermaroller is possible even without Minoxidil. It energizes the hair follicles by stimulating blood flow. Proper instructions must be followed for using the dermaroller so that the hair doesn’t get tangled or damaged. An expert skin doctor can help you out better.
