Pediatric Dermatology

Pediatric dermatology is a branch of medicine where children with skin diseases are treated, and proper care is given to them along with surgery. When a child has a skin condition like eczema, birthmarks, warts, psoriasis, etc., a pediatric dermatologist is consulted to treat it, as they have the experience and qualification to treat a wide variety of skin conditions using some of the latest available techniques. Nowadays surgical procedures such as laser therapy and cutaneous surgery can treat skin disorders very effectively. They generally provide the following services:

  • Diagnosis of various skin conditions, including hemangiomas and other vascular birthmarks, pigmented birthmarks, and congenital skin disorders, eczema or atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, vitiligo, hives, and warts to name a few
  • Medical treatment for a wide variety of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails
  • Minor surgical procedures, including skin biopsies, surgical removal of skin lesions (e.g., cysts, warts), and laser treatment of vascular birthmarks., etc.

The pediatric and dermatologic communities have not yet reached consensus on appropriate cleansing practices for infants. Infants have thin skin and muscles which are even smaller than adult skin that causes water loss (TEWL).  Infections and specific other factors cause skin disorder. Bacterial infections like cellulitis, erysipelas, fungal infections like candida, jock itch and viral infections like chickenpox can be effectively treated by a  pediatric dermatologist.

SYMPTOMS:

As we now know skin infection or disorder has a lot of different causes, and hence symptoms of most of them are the same. Common symptoms include redness of the skin or sometimes a burning sensation. Some may even experience itching, pain, and dryness in that area. Immediate action should be taken, and the affected individual should get it treated in the early stages of the disease, otherwise, critical complications may happen, which could be very serious.

Disorders like Scabies, etc., are difficult to spot, because they may take between 4 to 6 weeks for a child to develop the symptoms, after coming in contact with an infected person.

TREATMENT:

A lot of modern technologies have developed such as laser surgery, etc. to cure a variety of skin conditions. But some chronic conditions are not curable; they are managed by taking medications and by focusing on lifestyle. There is a rise of skin cancer due to excessive tattooing on the skin. For that, laser tattoo removal treatment is considered. The intensity of light is to be chosen, Q-switched lasers being the best that removes tattoos without any scars.

Duration for skin treatment varies widely. Some even take weeks to cure, or some take a few days or so depending on the type of skin disease. The early you identify, the better it is to heal.

Hence there is extensive scope for treatment for skin disorders through advanced treatments, and proper protection is needed against such diseases. Early identification of disease and treatment is required to be safe from skin disorders.

It is highly recommended and extremely important to consult one of the best dermatologist or a good skin doctor for any kind of skin related issues of children.
